Or without a menu plan.
Or when you’re incredibly sleep deprived.
Or hungry.
That, my friends, is my result of my weekly shopping trip.
I’m guessing I won’t be grocery shopping next week.
So, what happened is that my flight didn’t get in last night until 0200, and I had to wake up at 0700 for work. You may be thinking, what’s the big deal? That’s still five hours!
Yeah…I don’t do well on anything less than, like, seven and a half. Plus I didn’t sleep great, so all day today I was dragging. Unfortunately, I had absolutely NO food in my house, so I knew I had to go grocery shopping directly from work because if I went home first, I’d crash.
And then I’d sleep until around 0300 and be in the same place tomorrow.
So, I went grocery shopping.
With no list, no menu plan, and a slightly rumbly tummy.
Never a good idea.
I guess I can’t complain too much, though, because if you’ll notice – all the groceries on that table are healthy AND nutritious!
It’s just a LOT of healthy and nutritious.
I eat a lot of salad during the week, so the spinach and butter lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, bell peppers, and avocados are no big deal. I love roasted veggies, so the broccoli and cauliflower are ok. Garlic, onion, and shallot are staples, so they are ok. The bag of broccoli slaw and the zucchini were total impulse buys, and I will have to come up with something to do with them this week.
The meat is sort where I went off the rails. Grass fed sirloin steaks, organic chicken, uncured bacon, chorizo, and wild-caught swordfish.
Really?
As if I’ll go through all of that this week. I do, however, freeze a lot of leftovers and I use my crock pot A LOT, so it won’t go to waste.
I also went a little overboard on the fruits. I don’t generally eat a lot of fruit… so why, exactly, did I feel the need to buy oranges, a pear, four lemons, and two plantains? Not to mention the apples and grapes I already had in my fridge.
Yeah, I don’t know either.
The bright side? At least we know I won’t starve.
Give me a break. When I go grocery shopping when hungry and/or with no list, I come back with ice cream, cookies, brownies, pizza… you get the idea. 😛 It’s not pretty. You should be thankful you just bought more than you needed! None of that stuff will go to waste. You can freeze all those vegetables for future recipes like beef stew, stir fry, ect. Fruit stays pretty long in the fridge so you can easily eat that next week. No worries!
